Visual Reference: Japanese Crochet Symbols & English Terms

We have created a list of how crochet knitting symbols (stitch symbols) are expressed in English patterns.
I hope it will also be useful when trying to understand English patterns that do not come with a knitting diagram.

The way knitting is described differs between the US and the UK, but to avoid confusion, on this page we have mainly used the US notation as a reference.
Please note that the English notation may differ depending on the recipe or book. Also, there may be several ways to express a single symbol, so please use this as a reference only.

In addition to the symbols listed here, there are many other useful English expressions to know, so I would like to gradually compile them on a separate page.

There are some things I was able to include in this list and some things I wasn't able to include, but it's interesting to see how even if the knitting pattern symbols are the same, they are expressed differently depending on the language.

For example, in Japan, a ponytail is expressed as "a ponytail with three medium double crochets" or "a ponytail with five double crochets," but in English, if you knit a ponytail with a medium double crochet it is called a "puff," and if you knit it with a double crochet it is called a "bobble."

Also, when you work 5 double crochets into the stitch of the previous row, it is expressed as "5dc in next sc (in next sc: into the next knit stitch)", and if you then take the chain from the previous row and knit it into a bundle, it becomes "5dc in ch sp (ch sp: the space created by the chain from the previous row)", which is quite easy to understand.
