This is a crocheted piece.

I tried making a crocheted handkerchief.
Spring is also the season when new lives begin.
Just like buying new things for your daily life, it can be fun to knit new everyday accessories.

This handkerchief is knitted using linen yarn, which is water-resistant and highly absorbent.
It's a good idea to knit it with a sturdy yarn that can be washed.

Handkerchiefs are practical and it's a good idea to have several in different colors, so you might find yourself wanting to knit several in different colors.
It would make a great Mother's Day gift or a small gift for someone close to you.

Because it is small, it can be completed in a short amount of time, but the edges are carefully knitted, so it is a piece that gives you a sense of accomplishment when you finish it.

You can also adjust the size to fit the thickness of your yarn, so we've included instructions on how to adjust the size at the end.
It can be made into not only square but also rectangular shapes, so it can be used as a basket cover, multi-purpose cloth, or lunch mat.
Please try knitting it with your favorite yarn and size!

Instructions

Please refer to the crochet pattern along with these instructions.
Here we will explain how to knit the first and second pages of the knitting pattern.

① Start knitting by casting on 43 chain stitches, and for the first row, pick up one chain on the other side of the cast-on and the back of the chain and knit.
Knit back and forth up to row 22, but be careful as row 23 will have 3 double crochets in it.
After you finish knitting the 23rd row, leave the yarn on without cutting it.

②Start knitting the edge from the top left position of the second knitting pattern.
In the first row of edge knitting, when knitting a quarter stitch into the chain of the main body or into a double crochet stitch (right side of the knitting pattern), knit it into a bundle.
Crochet two double crochets in the second row of edge knitting, and then gather the chain from the previous row (first row of edge knitting) into a bundle.
Once you have completed the third row of edge stitching, cut the yarn.

How to adjust the size

The size of this piece can be adjusted by changing the number of cast-on stitches on the handkerchief body and the number of rows knitted.
It's difficult to make fine adjustments, but you can make it larger or smaller, or knit it into a rectangle instead of a square.

Width arrangement

If you adjust the width using the method below, the number of stitches will match when you crochet the edge.

The basic size handkerchief has 6 stitches x 7 patterns + 1 = 43 stitches.
If you are adjusting the width based on the basic size, increase or decrease the number of cast-on stitches for the basic size, with 12 stitches (6 stitches x 2 patterns) as one set.

For example, the larger arrangement example shown on the third page of the knitting pattern PDF file has been adjusted in size using the same method.
The cast-on stitches for a large handkerchief are 6 stitches x 9 patterns + 1 = 55 stitches.
This is the number of cast-on stitches for the basic size, 43 stitches, plus 12 stitches.

Conversely, if you want to reduce the width, reduce the number of stitches in 12-stitch increments from the basic size of 43 stitches.
If you go one size smaller, the number of cast-on stitches will be 43 - 12 = 31 stitches.

Another way to check is to check if the number of patterns is an odd number, such as 3, 5, 7, or 9.

Height arrangement

If you adjust the height in sets of 6 rows, the number of stitches will match when you crochet the edge.
Again, to explain based on the example of a larger arrangement on the third page of the knitting pattern PDF file, the basic size is knitted up to 23 rows, while the larger arrangement is knitted up to 29 rows, which is 6 more rows.
If you want to make it smaller, subtract 6 rows and knit up to the 17th row.

Only the final row has a different knitting pattern, so even if you adjust the size, please knit the final row using the 23rd row of the basic size.

Size adjustment while maintaining square shape

As explained above, to change the width, use a set of 12 stitches, and to change the height, use a set of 6 rows to adjust the size.
If you want to adjust the overall size while maintaining a square, try increasing or decreasing the width by one set, then increasing or decreasing the height by one set as well.
However, please note that we have not confirmed whether this method will maintain the square shape when the size is increased or decreased to any desired size.

Marotan's "Carefully Knitted Handkerchief"

This is the first time I've knitted with cotton yarn. The yarn is "Cottonable" from Daiso. I have a little bit left over from one ball. At first it felt difficult to knit, but as the little stitches lined up in my hands, I started to look forward to the finished product and it started to look kind of cute. As the recipe name suggests, it's a sense of accomplishment that can only be achieved by "knitting carefully." I'm sure I'll knit it again and again. Thank you as always for the wonderful recipes!
