Free Crochet Pattern: Slim Pencil Case | All-Season

This is a crocheted piece.

This pen case is made by folding a long crocheted motif.
It has a slim design that is perfect for when you only want to carry one pen.
It's flat and has no gusset, so it doesn't take up much space in your bag.

I knitted it in vibrant neon colors and added a highlighter pen of the same color to the yellow.
It would be fun to knit it in natural colors or with yarn.

After knitting the motif, if you add a felt or other lining before assembling it, it could also be used as a crochet hook case.
If you knit it longer, you can even fit a knitting needle in it.

The size and length of the motif can be adjusted by changing the number of cast-on stitches and the number of rows, so you can use the size of the sample piece as a reference and adjust the size to suit what you want to include.
Personally, I think it would be nice to knit a case that fits the size of my precious fan.

The PDF knitting patterns include two types of pencil cases: one for one pencil and one for two pencils.
The single-pen holder is perfect for storing fountain pens and other items.
The two-pen holder is large enough to hold two thin mechanical pencils or ballpoint pens.

The lid of the pen case is held in place with a thin rubber band, so no metal fittings are required.

Slim Pencil Case Knitting Pattern (PDF)

Instructions

Please refer to the crochet pattern along with these instructions.

①This piece is knitted using two strands of yarn.
To start the motif, cast on the chain. Cast on 72 stitches for one strand and 70 stitches for two strands.

Because there are many cast-on stitches and the chain is long, it tends to twist easily.
If you hold down the base of the yarn (just at the base of the hook) every four or so chain stitches as you knit, the chain will be less likely to twist and you will be able to knit it neatly.

②For the first row of knit stitches, on one side, pick up the strand on the other side of the cast-on chain and the back of the knot, and on the other side, pick up the remaining strand and knit.
Increase the number of stitches at the corners of each row, and knit up to the third row for one strand and up to the fourth row for two strands.

For corners from the second row onwards, gather the first chain stitch from the previous row into a bundle and knit. ③Once you have knitted the motif, leave the yarn attached without cutting it.
Before sewing with a pull-out stitch, use a steam iron to flatten the twists in the knitted fabric and create a neat finish.

④Fold the knitted fabric with the right sides facing outwards, referring to the measurements on the knitting pattern.
There is a rising stitch in the center of the short side, so from there work a slip stitch towards the corner.
Next, pick up one strand each on the inside of the two overlapping knitted pieces and sew half a stitch. Once you have sewn all the way to the bottom, cut the yarn.

⑤Next, attach thread to the other bottom and pull out half a stitch along the other edge.
After stitching up to the top corner, stitch one piece of knitted fabric up to the point where the motif starts.
Cut the yarn and prepare it so that it fits into the first slip stitch.

⑥ Referring to the knitting pattern, thread a thin elastic band through the knitted fabric to hold the flap in place.

How to adjust the size?

・Adjust the length

If you want the pencil case to be longer, add more cast-on stitches.
If you are using one strand, the total vertical length of the motif will be the length of the cast-on plus about 3 cm.If you are using two strands, the total length will be the length of the cast-on plus about 4 cm.
If you want to shorten it, estimate the length in the same way and adjust it by reducing the number of cast-on stitches.

・Adjust the width

If you want a wider stitch, knit more rows.
You increase stitches in the same way each row, so continue knitting from the fourth row onwards, increasing stitches at the corners in the same way.
As you increase the number of rows you knit, the vertical length of the knitted fabric will also increase, so be sure to take this into account when adjusting the size.
